Next week I get to present some data to a bunch of printer geeks. I took a bunch of Linux distributions and plugged in various printers and swore a lot and wrote down what I did to get the printing working. Plus, I wrote down the quirks I found. I’m sure I’m going to get skewered for my mistakes and, even better, I have to travel to Kentucky to do this. A week away from home (which is the only place I sleep well) and in the south, to boot.
If anyone has any suggestions for what to eat or do in Cincinnati or Lexington, let me know. I think I should have some free time. Most likely I’ll be sitting in a hotel room with my laptop on (if I have intarweb connectivity) watching the World Series.
Speaking of not sleeping well, I haven’t been sleeping enough this week. I went to sleep early last night and I woke up having a nightmare about going to see a movie and being annoyed by the guy next to me shining little mini-flashlights in his face during the movie. His girlfriend was doing it too. When I asked them to stop, they started arguing with me. Yeesh.
Back in the real world, I had to detour during my normal commute because there was a police car blocking my way. I didn’t see anything in the news about it and my sister thinks it might have been a movie filming. What the hell. I thought movies were supposed to be made in LA or Vancouver, Canada, not in Portland where they block the streets and annoy me. Sheesh.
I’m so sorry. I’m originally from Louisville and I can tell you, there’s not a damned thing to do in either Lexington or Cincinnati. Both cities are kind of far from each other though, are you staying somewhere in the middle?
You’re going to Cincinnati/Lexington and Mariko is going to Tokyo/Osaka? Well, as you say, some people don’t believe your luck. But at least you shouldn’t run into any filming detours.
I lived in Lexington for 10 years while I was going to school. It is a beautiful southern city with a nice charm. Unfortunately to really enjoy the city it is best to have a car…public transit there sucks arse! There are tons of great places to eat, especially if you’re on the expense account. I highly suggest Sal’s (Italian Steakhouse), DeSha’s (downtown with a lovely bar), Portifinos (Italian downtown, expensive), Billy’s Bar-B-Que (A taste of Western Kentucky Pizza), Mellomushroom Pizza (campus area), Atomic Cafe (Downtown funky Caribean restaurant) and my favorite, Ramsey’s (Southern Homestyle cooking…a local chain, very affordable).
As for things to do, I highly suggest going for a pint at McCarthy’s Irish Pub downtown, a tour of Woodford Reserve Bourbon Distillery outside Lexington near Versailles (which they pronouce as it is spelled, instead of as the french say it!), and The Kentucky Horse Park, which includes a nice museum of the AMerican Saddlehorse. The Kentucky History museum is also interesting and free, but is located about 45 minutes from Lexington in the capital, Frankfort. If you like to hike, Raven’s Run is just east (?) of town. For Lexintonians dinner, the mall and a movie is a typical night out..they are rather plain folk. There is a local music scene that is very popular and often centers around a club called The Dame downtown, and there is also a nice but expensive pool bar downtown called Yesterdays.
I’ll try to think; I’m sure there are more “quintescential Lexington” experiences to be had…but these were on the top of my mind!
Well, if you’re in the mood for “local” treats and have time to stop, I think they sell buckeyes (candy) in the Cincinnati airport.
